As a small girl hairdresser Kelda Mason's dolls had the best hairdos on the street. But these days it's her clients who have the top hairstyles. The Timaru' hairdresser, is also a senior regional stylist at the South Canterbury Hairdressing Awards. Kelda reckons she was destined to become a hairdresser from an early age. "It's something I just always wanted to do and I used to practise on my dolls as a child." And the career is everything she hoped it would be.
She enjoys most the challenge of changing a person's complete look by cutting and colouring their hair.
She has watched people's self-confidence grow after a new style. People use the hairdresser as a pick-me-up. "People who are feeling a bit down or have the flu come in just to make themselves feel better."
Kelda has been hairdressing for almost nineteen years, during which time she has built up a loyal client base. "People have a close relationship with their hairdresser. They want somewhere to come and talk."
Kelda said the best hair styles were those that took into consideration a person's face and body shape and a good hairdressers will understans what the client wants. And yes, she has had to perform some unusual cuts.
In her early years in the job a girl wanted her long hair divided into squares. Each alternative square was shaved short, while the other sections were plaited. Kelda said it was an honour to get the hair dressing award. She loved entering the competitions and she loves being a hairdresser. "It's a way to express yourself."
