Hairdressing Life Support - What sustains Renya Xydis
"I've got a six-year-old and a 10-year-old, and they're the strong things in my life. They continually motivate me in my hairdressing and work, because I think that kids need inspired and inspiring parents to keep them going. I always knew I was going into hairdressing. For me, it's about nurturing and being creative. The creative part is the easiest because it just comes effortlessly now.

Waikato's traditional barbers - close shave in the seventies.
But Lester Thorley finds a new generation of barbers have picked up the scissors. IT'S A monument to 1969 interior design. Dark brick knee-high wall to surround pot plants, pine-look veneer on the walls, yellow lino, black vinyl bench seat. But Maxwells Barbers Hairshop, in a small block of shops in Clyde St, Hamilton, is also a testament to the enduring appeal of the gentleman's barber.

New Zealand Dreadlocks Culture

Dreadlocks dangle from the car door, sweep the floor in nightclubs and are measured in years, not lengths. Amanda Linnell meets dreadlocked Kiwis for whom hair is more life than a style.
HOW'S a girl to keep up? Just after you've cut your hair into a modern-day mullet, your hairdresser's preaching a conversion to Farrah-flicks. Yet as you fork out money on new styles, colours and a seemingly endless array of styling lotions and potions, a group of hipsters are smugly watching from the sideline.

Two-thirds of women have left their hairdresser unhappy with the result, a New Zealand survey has found. In most cases the problem has been miscommunication between customer and cutter when trying a new style. Of the unhappy punters, 33 per cent left the salon feeling embarrassed and for 16 per cent it ended in tears.

Story by Richard Kavanagh - About fifteen years ago I had an incredible experience. While working in a small salon in Devonport, Auckland I was witness to the transformative power of a great hairdo. A woman came to the salon to have a haircut. New to the salon and painfully shy, she literally skulked into the salon hugging the walls and trying to make herself as small and invisible as possible.
