When you slop on the sunscreen this summerDon't forget it's your hair and hair colour is doing it tough. Most of us frantically tone, tighten, tweak and tan our bodies before hitting the beach, but the hair on our heads often gets forgotten.
![]() Sleek, smooth hair is one of summer's biggest challenges. Sun and wind are two of the harshest elements our hair colour contends with and the Waikato summer involves plenty of both.
With the amount of time active Kiwis spend outdoors, hair colour lightens a shade or three in summer conditions. It also becomes dry, frizzy and flyaway. Until recently, there's been no elegant way for hair to emerge from a day frolicking in sea and sand. However an impressive selection of new hair-care products promises moisture, sun protection and anti-frizz qualities, going some way to avoiding that just-had-an-electric-shock look.
Kerastase Soleil is a sun-specific hair collection, designed to protect against sun, salt and chlorine. The Creme Richesse, a delicious-smelling concoction, is an intensive repair treatment combined with hair colour shines.
Likewise Redkens Colour Extend Total Recharge, a conditioning treatment to prevent hair colour fading, protect against sun damage and add instant shine.
Like skin, summer hair requires generous daily doses of sunblock and conditioner. Wella SP Sunshine Lotion, with water resistant UV filter (SPF15) protects your hair colour and scalp from the sun. Keep this chic orange cube in your bag and apply whenever you venture outside.
Schwarzkopf Bonacure Smooth Express, for a pack of 10, offers nifty individually sealed packets of conditioner with honey extract. Apply, rinse and enjoy instantly smooth hair.
The best protection is to cover up completely with a bandana or hat, but that's not always practical. So drench your hair in conditioner (try Schwarzkopf Bonacure Moisture Conditioner -- just spray and leave in) and slick it back; this works for all lengths.
If you need something more formal, this wet look still works, just add a stylish flower behind your ear or a diamante clip. Alternatively, spray your hair and scalp with sunblock (or try Redken Airtight Finishing Spray, which locks out humidity, UV rays, pollution and smoke), tie your hair in a high ponytail and add a zigzag parting.
For those days when there's just not enough time to wash hair heavy with salt and grime, try Redken's Smart Wax, designed to work in all temperatures. Just rub through your hair and style with abandon for that casual unstructured look and it's gentle on your hair colour.
The trick to stylish summer hair is healthy tresses, so lather on conditioner, sunblock to assist hair colour protection.
Step 1: Part hair as far back as desired, leave two sections at front anrest of hair in ponytail.
Step 2: Wrap front sections around ponytail to hide hair tie, securing with bobby pins.
OR: Take small section of ponytail and twist into a tight knot leaving ends out. Secure with bobby pins into the ponytail.
Rub toffee between hands, pinch and scrunch on the midlengths and ends to add texture. Finish off with elastic hairspray.
