IT'S hard to imagine occupations so diverse as a society hairdresser and a greyhound trainer but Robert Arnold has been successful at both. And on Saturday week he and his greyhound Did I Entertain will carry NSW's hopes in the Schweppes National Sprint Championship final in Perth. Did I Entertain pulled off one of the sport's biggest upsets at Wentworth Park on Saturday night when, as a $34 outsider, he bolted away with the NSW Sprint Championship final. That catapulted Did I Entertain into the national final and gave Arnold his biggest success since selling his posh Double Bay ladies' hairdressing salon to become a full-time greyhound trainer. Changing occupations meant dropping income, but Arnold had no hesitation making the switch.
While at Double Bay he trained a few greyhounds as a hobby, but ``fell in love'' with each dog and could not bear to part with any when their racing days were over.
The hairdresser bought a property at Wingello, in the Southern Highlands, as a ``retirement home'' for his old racers. As their numbers swelled they needed full- time care so a decade ago Arnold sold his thriving Double Bay salon and moved south.
To survive he had to change his vocation as a hairdresser to become a professional greyhound trainer and on Saturday week Did I Entertain gives him a shot at a $50,000 winner's cheque -- his biggest yet.
``I was as surprised as anyone to see Did I Entertain win on Saturday even though I've always known he was very good,'' Arnold said yesterday.
``Before Saturday the ex hairdresser had earned $44,000 prizemoney from nine wins. Now we're off to Perth. I haven't been there since I was bumming around Australia 40 years ago.''
And the name? Cricket fan Arnold says: ``That was Brian Lara's succinct remark when he retired from the game.'' Arnold bought Did I Entertain as a puppy.
``I picked him by throwing an empty plastic milk bottle along the yard where there was a litter of pups. ``I decided to choose the one that got to the bottle first, it was Did I Entertain.''
