At FRESHWATER, a group of hairdressers have brought out the best of the northern beaches, organising a huge charity drive for the Children's Hospital at Westmead. The September 19 fundraiser, by Cassidy's of Harbord Hairdressing, has once again revealed the big heart of the northern beaches community, with a mass of donations from businesses and students. Dozens of boxes containing an extensive range of donated goods are waiting to be handed out to families in need.

In addition to the hairdressers several local tradesmen and businesses have offered their services free for the cause. One client of eight years, real estate agent Vince Donovan, has offered to donate his commission on the sale of a house.
And he is now looking for a homeowner who wants to sell their house for the cause. ``They've put on this wonderful charity and are doing a hell of a lot of work and are 100 per cent genuine,'' he said.
Hairdressers and Salon owner Nicky Cassidy said she was inspired by a friend's son, who was left with permanent brain damage after falling from a bunk bed. ``The community has just been amazing every client I know has donated something towards the day, without us even asking them,'' she said.
``I feel very proud to be a part of this community. ``It's touched a lot of people's hearts.'' The hairdressers said.
The salon has almost ticked off all the items on a wish-list developed by Ronald McDonald House.
Mrs Cassidy said the charity provides accommodation for 18 families next door to the hospital while their children receive treatment, but has to turn away many more.
Another organiser, Melissa Greco, said: ``It's so sad for the parents having to deal with their children being in hospital they really have it hard,'' she said. ``It will be nice to be able to do something for them and make a bit of a change.''
