Queensland hairdressers are right up there in cutting-edge style and imaginative creativity. ONCE again, Queensland hairdressers have proved that they have what it takes to turn heads. Eight hairdressers, stylists and colourists have made it to the finals of the Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFA) in categories ranging from Apprentice Hairdresser of the Year to Australian Hairdresser of the year.
![]() Each year, the awards are judged in London by a panel of the UK's leading hairdressers. Their chief concern? To recognise hairdressers whose photographic collection reflects the latest trends in hair fashion. In making their decisions, they take into account the model, make-up, clothes, accessories and lighting as well as the hair.
Judge Mark Hayes, from Vidal Sassoon's London Academy and recipient of the 2004 British Hairdresser of the Year award, believes Australian hairdressers are leading the way in forecasting hair fashion trends. ``They are the most creative and imaginative hairdressers I've seen and aren't afraid to push the boundaries of hair creativity.''
High praise indeed. Which is why it's great to see so many local hairdresser gurus in the running for the awards, to be announced at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards at Sydney's Town Hall.
On today's page is a glimpse of the collections on which some of the Queensland hairdressers have been judged. Enjoy.
Lee CohenLee Cohen of Reds Salon hairdressers and Spa in Cairns, style top right, is the 2004 Australian Hairdresser of the Year and a finalist in AHFA Australian Hairdresser of the Year and 2005 AHFA Queensland Hairdresser of the Year.
He believes fringes are still big news even though they require a little more commitment than many hairdressers styles. According to Cohen, a wide fringe cut into the hair around the face best suits those with strong facial features.
Not so sure? Ease into the idea with a long sweeping fringe. Perfect for an oval-shaped face, it also can be the best way to banish the need for Botox and hide any creasing on the forehead.
Carol HaddadCarol Haddad, from Corcorz for Hair at South Bank, is a finalist in AHFA Queensland Hairdresser of the Year and AHFA Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year.
Known for her way-out way with hair, Haddad recommends digging out the crimping iron and doing whatever it takes to make waves of all shapes and sizes.
Her long, tight curls are another strong look for the season and remind us all that hair should have movement and texture rather than just lying flat against the face.
Oscar CullinanOscar Cullinan from Oscar Oscar Salons (Queensland) and Synergy by Oscar (Sydney), is a finalist in 2005 AHFA Australian Hairdresser of the Year.
Cullinan says summer is the perfect time to forget high-maintenance styling aids such as the straightening iron.
``No one is interested in poker-straight tresses this summer,'' he says.
Instead, it's all about ``soft loose waves, relaxed layers and lots of texture''.
This hairdressers also recommends a revival of the bob. ``Shorter hairstyles are easier to manage and cooler to wear during our long, hot summer.''
Geoffrey HerbergGeoffrey Herberg, of Chemistry for Hair at Fortitude Valley, style bottom left, is a finalist in 2005 AHFA Creative Colourist of the Year.
He believes colour is at its best when it appears natural and well placed. Say goodbye to chunky highlights and hello to more solid colour work. That's not to say fashion colours are out.
Indeed, Herberg's hairdressing collection sparkles with hints of contrasting colour such as pale aqua and pastel pink, spliced in among more realistic tones. Whatever your shade of choice, hairdressers like Herberg believes colour placement should ``accentuate the texture or shape of a cut''.
