A RECORD 1200 homeless and disadvantaged people turned out at City Hall for this week's Homeless Connect event. Numbers had doubled from previous years as clients were treated to 230 haircuts, more than 1500 meals, 150 natural therapy sessions, 48 doctors appointments and 41 flu vaccinations.
The free Brisbane City Council event was assisted by 200 volunteers including Lady Mayoress Lisa Newman. About 50 doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists, therapists, lawyers, podiatrists, ophthalmologists and hairdressers giving haircuts also volunteered their services on the day.
Donations were received from many businesses including a dozen hairdressers from Brisbane School of Hairdressing who donated haircuts free of charge, while Pacific Brands donated $60,000 of new clothing such as underwear, singlets, T-shirts and warm tracksuits. This year was the first year St Vincent de Paul Society took over the management and distribution of all charitable donations.
Brisbane's Homeless Connect has been copied in other capital cities across the country. Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and the Gold Coast now host similar events.
