Hottest haircut for 2010 |

While doing a radio interview the other day, I was asked what was the hottest haircut for 2010. I sifted frantically through my grey matter for the latest celebrity haircut that had women screaming into salons: the next Farrah, the next Posh, the next Rachel. And then I realised that the next Hottest haircut for 2010 was actually not to have one.
For the first time in a long time, women are eschewing the coif creations of Hollywood and opting for that safe haven of long, lazy layers. The type of hairstyle that means you can skip every second salon appointment -- that's the hottest haircut for 2010.
I attribute this trend partly due to the recession and partly due to the fact that the haircuts favoured by the rich and famous tend to be grossly expensive (Jennifer Aniston); super short (Rihanna); teeming with extensions, (Nicole Richie) or exceptionally high maintenance (Victoria Beckham).
In times past (like, oh, 2009), we mortals would breathlessly attempt to emulate these celebrity hairstyles (in my case with about as much success as a squid cooking a souffle), caring little that our hairdresser told us it would require three-weekly cuts and $4 billion worth of styling product.
``No problem!'' we shouted, running our fingers through the new masterpiece furnishing our scalp, ``Book me in!''
But we're not so quick to throw down our cash the second our cut loses its shape any more. No, we demand the hottest haircut will still look good in eight weeks. A haircut that is both versatile and classic. In short: no tricky fringes, no pixie crops, not painstakingly chopped into layers and spikes.
(Our friends in Melbourne must really be struggling.) There's another reason the classic long, layered look is popular again: while it might not be mind-blowingly artistic or terribly exciting, it is flattering on pretty much everyone.
And despite what those roguish short-haired types tell you, long hair is definitely easier to style -- or pull back into a chic little bun or pony. And if you're worried about your waves or curls? Relax: they hide split ends marvellously and with a bit of sea salt spray will create that textured bedhead look that refuses to move onto trend heaven.
If you're the type who needs celebrity inspiration, look to long, loosely layered types and the hottest haircut for 2010 like Angelina Jolie, Abbie Cornish, Rachel Weisz, Blake Lively, and Isla Fisher for perfect examples of the recession-proof mop.

Do not, under any circumstances, look at Lindsay Lohan. There is vast difference between subtly cheating the system and blatantly spitting in its face.
