WELLINGTON hairdresser Derek Elvy former winner of New Zealand Masters Hairdresser of the Year title in 2003 presented at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards Sydney. Mr Elvy, who owns Buoy Hairdressing in the Majestic Centre on Wellington's Willis St, was given the title "to recognise his involvement in editorial styling, catwalk parades, work on The Lord of the Rings movies and the fact a hairdresser that's inspiration to all New Zealand hairdressers".
![]() In 2003 a record number of entries were received for the masters category and these were sent to London to be judged by a panel of nine internationally recognised hairdresser's, including Trevor Sorbie (most awarded hairdresser in the world), Richard Thompson (Mahogany Hairdressing, London), Phil Smith (Toni&Guy International) and celebrity hairdresser Errol Douglas. The judges were looking for images that broke new ground in both a commercial and professional sense.
Mr Elvy submitted a portfolio of black and white photographs inspired by famous fashion designer Rudi Gernreich (who shocked the fashion world in the 60s with his topless swimsuit), Gernreich's model and muse Peggy Moffit, fashion and jazz photographer William Claxton and legendary hairdresser Vidal Sassoon.
Mr Elvy was also one of three finalists in the Avant Garde category at the awards. He says that after more than 20 years in hairdressing, he remains passionate about avant garde work because it allows complete creativity. "We're going through a period of death of creativity in art.
"We no longer programme people to be creative; we programme them to be commercially viable," he said. After adding the masters award to his collection, Mr Elvy will not be resting on his laurels. The hairdresser has since opened Australasia's first Sebastian grand salon, replacing his existing salon in the Majestic Centre.
Taking over a massive 280 square metre space on the second floor of the Majestic Centre, Mr Elvy, master hairdresser, is rebranding Buoy and creating a super salon offering a total hair and makeup experience. Sebastian Trucco makeup will be available as well as the services of a nail technician and makeup artist. There will be 22 hair stylists and food on offer to revive while you're made over. |
