Long hair is riding a wave of popularityLong hair - PLAITS please! That's the request hairdressing salons are hearing more frequently. But these braids are nothing like the ones your mother interlaced into well-kempt pigtails on school mornings. Hair braiding has moved from TV screen to mainstream for women wanting long hair.
Spectra Hair co-owner Mike Miers says long hair is having a resurgence in popularity. He says although trends take a while to filter down from the main centres to Manawatu, the braided look sported by girl groups and TV stars is finally here. "In the provincial towns like Palmerston North, trends start with the young kids and it takes one or two years before it becomes acceptable to mature customers."
One thing different about the salon look and mum's morning plaiting sessions is the price. Braids don't come cheap, especially when combined with hair-extending procedures. Mr Miers says many customers with short hair who want long hair are now having hair extensions added. But this is not the painstaking - and pricey - procedure of movie stars where every single strand is joined to a new hair.
Instead, the more commonplace consumer service involves clipping larger pieces into the hair and incorporating it into a new cut and shape to achieve a long hair look. "It's getting to be something that is more of a hair accessory, professionally added, adapted to the hairstyle." Mr Miers says braids are just part of the wave of longer hair fashions headlining now. Long hair is flourishing.
Hairdresser Rodney Wayne says asymmetrical layers are the key to the winter long hair look. "More rounded, head-hugging styles and low partings with far more subtlety than last season will be the big sellers this year.
Long hair along with midlength cuts are still the most popular style and sweeping fringes are definitely hot." Both stylists agree colour accents are essential to today's long hair fashion cuts, with obvious highlights and funky shocking-shade streaks in vogue. Because dressing the hair is the ultimate finishing touch. "Long hair is all about presentation," Mr Miers says. "
