Mullet hairstyles stinkIF YOU'RE considering getting a mullet hairstyle, don't bother. It has been labelled the ``worst-ever'' haircut by Brisbane hairdresser Doreen Wallace. Wallace has more than 30 years' experience perfecting hairstyles and was recently crowned the 2007-08 National Champion at the Salon Only Awards in Sydney.
She said fashionistas should opt for a ``bob or layers and fringes'' if they want to keep up with the hottest styles around and forget about the Mullet hairstyle.
``There's been some awful mullet hairstyles and haircuts, ones where the hair was cut high up the ear and was long at the back,'' she said. ``Like mullets, Kylie Minogue had a shocking haircut in Neighbours and Jason Donovan did too, but they were the popular styles.
``Rolls and perms used to be big too but they aren't around much any more. I only pull out the rollers once a week.'' Mullet hairstyles are the things of the past. Wallace won the title of National Champion at the Salon Only awards in front of an expert hairdressing panel, winning the title ahead of more than 380 entrants.
``It was great to win it. I've entered plenty of competitions, but never won a national title,'' Wallace, the manager of E Street Hair Design at Acacia Ridge said yesterday. She made it down to 12 finalists from across Australia, with Brisbane model Model Sarah Waterworth showing off Wallace's award-winning ``bob'' hairstyle.
Wallace said winning the prestigious title was one of the highlights of her long-running career.
In the next few months a portrait of Wallace's award-winning hairstyle (did not include the mullet hairstyles) on Waterworth will be on the cover of the Salon Only hairdressing calendar, which will be distributed to hundreds of hair salons nationwide.
Wallace said Waterworth's fiery red hair stood out at the award finals. ``I picked Sarah to come to Sydney with me and compete because of her beautiful red hair,'' she said. ``She ended up being the only model with red hair in the finals, and she had her bob hairstyle in an Elgon colour.''
Wallace also won a $5000 travel voucher and will travel to Europe next year to pursue a five-day course at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London. There will be no mullet hairstyles anytime soon
