Two weeks out from my next hairstyle appointment I rang Jenny my stylist in a panic. "What if I had this friend," I said, "and she'd been spending most of the summer outside, either swimming or hanging out in the sun, and then she ran out of her good salon shampoo and conditioner and spent, say, $3.95 on new ones and then her hairstyle and hair went all dry and frizzy and her blonde highlights turned a funny shade of yellow?"
"So," said Jenny. "Your `friend' wasn't using a shampoo or conditioner with a UV protectant?"
"Ummmm, no."
"And her colour has faded, and her hairstyle and hair ends dried out and split?"
"Ummmm, guess so."
"Hmmmm, well, you get what you pay for," said Jenny sternly.
"The best thing to do is to get into a salon, get your hairstyle and hair tidied up, redone and have a conditioning treatment and then start again."
"Okay," I said, "but my friend wants to know if can you actually repair split ends or do you really have to have them cut off?"
"We can rebuild them," said Jenny suddenly sounding like she was auditioning for The Six Million Dollar Man, "but if we're going to cut them off anyway there's not much point. Best to tell your friend to get along to a salon pronto to sort her hair and at least get her hairstyle back on track."
Jenny's salon, Hairline at Five Crossroads, uses Kerastase Resistance Vita-Ciment concentrate to condition and repair hair, and that treatment, including a cut and style, costs about $78.
If you want to do it yourself, there's a sister product called Kerastase Resistance Forcintense which also reconstructs and conditions and it costs $52 but comes in a pack of five.
Before the big day comes and my friend can sink gratefully into her hairdresser's chair to save her hairstyle, coincidentally the one with Jenny in charge, she is smoothing the whole sorry mess down with L'Oreal Gloss polish.
It costs a mere $22.95 and is light, non-greasy and smells yummy. It claims to create a "glistening polished effect on supple of smooth hairstyle" and my friend says it's doing the job. Jenny says she'll see me soon.
