"AND would you like us to trim your carbon footprint as well as your fringe?''A chain of Queensland hair salon's is looking to save as much as 600,000 litres of water a year by replacing cotton towels with a biodegradable version. Sublime Hairdressing managing director Paul Foote said businesses had to make changes to make a difference to the environment.
He said the new single-use salon towels would save the energy and water used to wash and dry about 1000 conventional towels a week across four salons in Logan, Indooroopilly, Carindale and Chermside. In a year, the savings are an estimated 1.7 tonnes of greenhouses gases and eight swimming pools of water.
The salon towels, developed by Irish company Easydry, are made from wood fibres sourced from tree plantations in Asia.
Easydry's Australian branch general manager, Gavin Hinton, said the towels could break down in compost in 12 weeks. He said customers would notice the difference, as the new towels were thinner and lighter.
``It's a mind shift so it's better if they are told how they are saving water, energy and greenhouse gas. Otherwise they might just think the salon is downgrading,'' he said.
The salon has also introduced an option for customers to pay up to 15c extra which will go to Carbon Neutral, which has a range of carbon-offsetting schemes.
